Current status of the BOI newspaper supplement funds case

CHARGES PENDING

CIABOC corruption prosecution alleging that approximately Rs.1.7 million in Board of Investment (BOI) funds was improperly used on 19 Nov 2014 to publish newspaper supplements in 11 newspapers in connection with the second inauguration of then-President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Former Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and another accused are being prosecuted. The case has progressed to the evidence stage. There has been no conviction.

What’s happened

The case was heard before the Colombo High Court on 22 Jun 2026 and evidence was recorded from prosecution witnesses. Further proceedings were reported as scheduled for 30 Jul 2026, but no reliable public report confirming the outcome of that date has been located.
