On the night of 5 October 2026 the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau arrested former Colombo Municipal Councillor Mahinda Kahandagama near a restaurant in Mirihana with suspected crystal methamphetamine ('Ice'). Police allege preliminary investigations show he had been involved in drug trafficking for some time, and a second person was arrested with suspected 'Ice'. Sri Lanka Mirror reports the Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered him held under a detention order until 12 October for further questioning.
