Interpol process activated for Basil Rajapaksa amid two outstanding arrest warrants
Regarding Basil Rajapaksa
What happened?
Sri Lankan authorities activated the Interpol process concerning Basil Rajapaksa, citing two outstanding arrest warrants: the alleged purchase of a 1.5-acre property at Brown's Hill, Matara using allegedly illicit funds, and the alleged use of roughly Rs. 7.8 million belonging to the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau to distribute 12,000 T-shirts during the 2014 Uva Provincial Council election period. Daily Mirror reported that Interpol had already issued a Blue Notice; NewsFirst and Hiru News reported that Sri Lanka had requested one and that Interpol had sought further information. A Blue Notice is an information-gathering mechanism, not an international arrest warrant, charge, or finding of guilt.
What changed?
Both underlying cases were already tracked as having outstanding arrest warrants; this is the first Interpol-specific step reported in either matter, following a reported 18 September step toward US extradition (see basil-rajapaksa-extradition-process-2026-09-18). Rajapaksa's custody status is unchanged - he remains reported as overseas, with no physical custody confirmed.
What happens next?
No confirmed next step yet. No official Interpol or Sri Lanka Police confirmation resolving the Blue Notice's exact status has been publicly reported yet.
