Court of Appeal names three-judge bench for Wimal, Gammanpila and Jayaweera contempt referral

Court Order14 September 2026

Regarding Dilith Jayaweera, Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila

What happened?

The Court of Appeal appointed a three-judge bench - Justices Rohantha Abeysuriya (Court of Appeal President), Chamath Morais, and Adithya Patabendige - to hear the contempt-of-court referral against Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Dilith Jayaweera and three others (a former presidential aide, an activist, and a lecturer, none of whom are politicians tracked on Nadu). The referral arises from a Colombo Fort Magistrate finding of contempt around 5 August 2026, over statements linked to a July 2026 satyagraha protest against the arrest of former SIS Director Suresh Sallay - in Jayaweera's case, over comments in a television interview rather than at the protest itself. Jayaweera's own writ petition challenging the referral was separately listed for support on 18 September 2026.

What changed?

This is the first Nadu Update recorded for Dilith Jayaweera, who joins Nadu's existing record of this referral against Weerawansa and Gammanpila. No contempt finding has been made by the Court of Appeal against any of them.

What happens next?

18 September 2026: Jayaweera's writ petition is listed for support before the three-judge bench.
