MiG-27 procurement case recalled for 6 January 2027 after Attorney General referral
Regarding Gotabaya Rajapaksa
What happened?
On 2 September 2026, Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena recalled the MiG-27 procurement case for 6 January 2027, after investigating officers said the matter had been referred to the Attorney General for advice. The case principally concerns former Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga, who has been under investigation since 2016 and was arrested, remanded, and later released on bail in 2020. The court granted a defence request to temporarily lift Weeratunga's foreign travel ban until the next hearing. The hearing followed an earlier one on 13 May 2026, at which the CID told the court three rounds of discussions had already taken place with the Attorney General.
What changed?
This is the first time Nadu has recorded a court date, court, or Attorney General referral for the MiG-27 procurement case, which previously showed no confirmed court or scheduled hearing. It does not change former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's own status in the matter — he has not been named a party to this court proceeding, arrested, charged, or indicted.
What happens next?
6 January 2027: Case due to be recalled before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court following the Attorney General's advice.
