Court of Appeal bars arrest of former minister Tiran Alles in dishonoured-cheques complaint
Regarding Tiran Alles
What happened?
A two-judge Court of Appeal bench issued a writ barring police from arresting or detaining former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and the directors, representatives and employees of Ceylon Newspapers in connection with a CID investigation. The investigation follows a supplier's complaint over post-dated cheques allegedly issued and dishonoured for newsprint. The court characterised the dispute as a commercial transaction and said the material then presented was not sufficient to establish criminal wrongdoing.
What changed?
Alles is now protected from arrest in connection with this complaint. The court expressly allowed the CID to continue investigating and to take lawful action if new evidence emerges, so this is not an acquittal and does not end the investigation. Reports differ on whether the order is a final writ of prohibition or an interim order, and on whether it was made on 30 September or 1 October.
What happens next?
No confirmed next step yet. No further court date was reported. The CID investigation may continue.
