Court orders IGP to investigate Wimal Weerawansa's rally remarks on Namal Rajapaksa's remand order

Court Order18 September 2026

Regarding Wimal Weerawansa and Namal Rajapaksa

What happened?

Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara presented the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court with a CD of a speech Wimal Weerawansa gave at an SLPP rally in Anuradhapura on 12 September 2026, in which he commented on the court's earlier order remanding Namal Rajapaksa. Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered the Inspector General of Police to investigate whether the remarks amount to contempt of court and to report back.

What changed?

This is a new, distinct matter for Weerawansa - separate from his existing 2026 satyagraha contempt referral already before the Court of Appeal (wimal-weerawansa-contempt-referral), which concerns different conduct from a different month. No charge, arrest, or contempt finding has been made in either matter.

What happens next?

No confirmed next step yet. No IGP report, charge, or further court action has been publicly reported yet.
