Current status of the 2015 Kahawatta election murder case
UNDER APPEAL
Originally sentenced to death by the Ratnapura High Court in a murder case, later acquitted by the Court of Appeal. The Attorney General appealed the acquittal to the Supreme Court.
What’s happened
On 4 Sep 2026, the Supreme Court issued notices and overseas travel bans on Premalal Jayasekara and the two other respondents in the appeal challenging their acquittals, ordering them to appear on 21 Oct 2026. CID subsequently reported that Jayasekara had left Sri Lanka on 31 Aug 2026, before the travel ban was imposed.
