Premalal Jayasekara was convicted. The conviction is now under appeal.

Premalal Jayasekara and two co-accused were sentenced to death by the Ratnapura High Court on 31 Jul 2020 over the 2015 election-time shooting death of Shantha Dodamgoda at Kahawatta. The Court of Appeal acquitted all three on 31 Mar 2022. An appeal against that acquittal is now before the Supreme Court.

    Arrested

    Former MP Premalal Jayasekara was arrested by Nuwara Eliya Police on 21 April 2026 over an allegation that he threatened people with a firearm during a dispute between two groups. Police also reported that the firearm's licence had expired. He was granted bail by the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate's Court on 22 April 2026. These are allegations and no charge has been reported.
